Mass Readings for
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
First:  James 1:12-18
Psalm:  Psalm 94:12-15, 18-19
Second:
Gospel:  Mark 8:14-21

Random Fact:
The first TV commercial: a Bulova watch ticking onscreen for exactly 60 seconds.

Random Act:
Read up on Our Lady of Fatima.

Reflect:
We continue to hear today through St. James to not only persevere through difficult times but also to persevere to strengthen our guard against temptation. Our desires can get the best of us. St. James is pretty blunt about this, when we fall to our temptations, we sin and sin brings about death. We need to pray constantly to be consumed by grace to remain vigilant against our sinfulness.

Quote of the Day:
1 John 5:1-5 Psalm 37:3-6, 30-31 Matthew 10:22-25 Don't give in to discouragement. If you are discouraged it is a sign of pride because it shows you trust in your own powers. Never bother about people's opinions. Be obedient to truth. For with humble obedience, you will never be disturbed. -- Bl. Mother Teresa of Calcutta

I imagine someone will get fired for this: "A New York City man is suing JetBlue Airways for more than $2 million because he says a pilot made him give up his seat to a flight attendant and sit on the toilet for more than three hours on a flight from California."

Today, would have been Florence Nightingale's 188th birthday. So, hug a nurse! (If you know one...don't hug a stranger, that's creepy). At the very least, pray for nurses and all who serve in healthcare.

Do you doubt that prayer works? Check this out - St. Genevieve once asked the people of her town to pray and fast (rather than flee) when Atilla the Hun was coming to attack! When the prayer began, amazingly, he changed courses and never came near her city!

Looking for that "perfect" Mother's Day verse for her card? There are plenty...maybe try Proverbs 4:3 or Sirach 3:4. (And before you write 'em, read 'em).

For all of our American visitors, don't forget that this Sunday is Mother's Day. If you don't have any ideas for your mom, flowers are always good. If you don't have enough money to buy flowers, pray a rosary for her. She'll love it!
